Lemar retired after over 25 years with Shell plc and Goldman Sachs. She was an Executive Professor teaching the Capstone Project Course to Executive MBA students at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University and continues to enjoy guest lecturing.
Topic Synopsis:
What if you could negotiate so that you get what you want and improve your relationship with the other person? In this interactive session you will do a negotiating skills case study. Then learn the frameworks and tools of “win-win” negotiating. This is a style of negotiating or influencing in a way that is professional and appropriate for long-term work relationships.
Some of the most common problems that occur in negotiations that this program will teach you to overcome include:
· Each person wants something different and gets entrenched in their position. This leads to talking over one another, thinking about what you are going to say next instead of listening, negative emotions rising, and the “death spiral” of more of the same. This may damage the relationship, negatively impact your reputation, delay or ultimately prevent closing a successful negotiation.
· Feeling so unempowered and vulnerable when negotiating with your manager or someone higher in the organizational hierarchy, that you either don’t negotiate at all or negotiate badly.
· Having influence with people who do not report to you, over which you have no authority.
· Only thinking about negotiating tactics that can be used at the negotiating table. Therefore, not adequately preparing before the negotiation, which leads to sub-optimal results.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the other party
- Empower yourself in negotiation
- Develop Influence
