ESG Renewable Energy PM Workshop 1-Training

ESG Renewable Energy PM Workshop 1

Workshop 1: Global Energy Transition And the Role of Renewables- Project Management Perspective

Description:

While, technically, the renewable energy movement is five decades old, dating from the 1970's energy crisis, few will dispute that certain of the hallmarks of the current renewable energy initiatives are different in substance and kind. Among the notable differences are the dominant role Climate Change concerns play, the new breed of capital markets available for renewables initiatives, and parallel regulatory initiatives including renewable portfolio standards.

In the highly people dependent, capital project industry (project economy), a well trained project manager is essential for success. A good project manager can mean the difference between profit and loss. But even experienced project managers must augment their skills to keep up with digitization, automation, and changing data strategies - not to mention today’s sustainability challenges and new business practices.

Current research on next-generation project delivery methods revealed that sustained capability building and a redesigned talent pipeline are fundamental requirements for transforming the execution of large capital projects such as renewable energy capital projects required to accelerate the energy transition. Such projects are at the center of the global transition to net zero by 2050, so this type of transformation is now urgent. A plausible net-zero 2050 transition scenario envisions an average of $9.2 trillion a year to 2050 in capital spending on physical assets for energy and land use systems. An additional $1 trillion of today’s annual spending would have to be reallocated from high emissions to low emissions assets. To get the desired results from these investments, companies will need innovative approaches coupled with sophisticated stakeholder management - transforming capital-project delivery as we know it. Yet, systematically training the next generation of project managers is an ongoing issue for most capital project businesses. Many companies claim they would like to offer regular, comprehensive training, but add that they don’t know where to start or consider the problem just too big. After all, the industry is project based, decentralized, and fluid by nature.

Project Managers rotate not only within companies, but also across the sector, and would need to learn new skills to adapt to the new project environment. Add acute labor shortages of project managers to the mix, and systematic capability building has become a significant hurdle. At DEMS, we are helping companies looking to accelerate their Sustainability, New Energy, and Digital Transformation journey  by creating a broad capability-building program that addresses skill gaps in renewable energy project management across multiple industries.

As the renewable energy industry begins to experience this next normal in construction of portfolio of complex renewable energy capital projects, DEMS will help companies train the next generation of project managers and project leaders to develop the following three qualities:
-  Adaptability: receptive to change, able to adopt new methods quickly, and adept at executing projects involving more complex stakeholder ecosystems.
-  Digital proficiency: able to adopt, understand, troubleshoot, and develop new digital workflows and solutions and to manage data securely, efficiently, and effectively.
-  Business acumen: endowed with not only technical proficiency but also business sense, because this is an industry with a great deal of margin pressure.

Course Objectives:

1) Develop unique project management skills of the renewables industry

2) Develop insights into the role project management plays within the renewables industry

3) Leverage the project management skills gained in other industries to renewables
