The Art, Science and Process of Innovation

Innovation includes a variety of factors, all of which are impacted by project management to different degrees.  The purpose of distinctly articulating these three categories is to illustrate that the approach to innovation can be more complex than many people think.  At a minimum, innovation involves establishing the right improvement objectives, planning and conducting activities to generate ideas, evaluating which ideas will be pursued and then managing all the successive steps to implementation.

Each of the categories have dependencies with the others.  The “Science” and “Process” aspects in part involve technical expertise and project management skills.  It also includes the organization’s overall approach and execution in achieving the desired results.

The “Art” involves human behavior, culture and other variables that require soft skills and other abilities.  The methods and process can guide the effort, but leadership and the aptitude to adapt to changing conditions both internally and externally along with properly dealing with any unexpected developments is necessary.

This session covers high-level concepts and relationships between the art, science and processes for attendees to consider when planning for and managing innovation efforts with the objective of increasing the likelihood of successful outcomes.

Professional Development Units (PDU) for PMI certified professionals:

The introduction of the updated CCR system, has resulted in a much simpler procedure for claiming PDUs. As before, there are no specific PDU codes for events that award up to 2 PDUs. Each PMI Houston meeting with a 1-hour presentation, on a PM Talent Triangle topic, equals 1 PDU.
