Agile in 160 Billion Gallons: When Agile Principles Occur During A Disaster

Drew Shefman has been professionally developing interactive experiences since 1996. He is a software craftsman, agile evangelist, mentor, and scrum master. He has served as technical lead or architect on projects that have included virtual simulation training for the cell phone industry, performance testing engines for the airline industry, mission-critical high-volume order managing for the grocery industry, and video player development for high demand live streaming events, as well as dozens of other interactive experiences. He has been a technical trainer for over a decade, working with national training firms and video companies. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Houston since 2008, presenter at numerous conferences, and even a ballroom dance instructor. Relative to this topic, his house flooded in 2015 with 28", again in 2016 with 13" and finally -5" with Hurricane Harvey. (Yes that is negative 5 inches. Attend the presentation to discover how!)

Topic Synopsis:

While the Agile concepts may sometimes be easy, the why's and how's are a little trickier to wrap your head around. I’ve unfortunately participated in three recent rising floodwater events in Houston over the last three years. Employing my agile skills has had a profound impact on the "success of the project". I will be mapping common Agile ideas to dealing with rising water encroaching on your home. I start with an interactive exercise where we talk about flooding, with the outcome being the question: “What do you do when you know that your house might flood?” The answer to this question is the “backlog” in agile terms. We will talk about the demo, retro, and sprint planning as the most critical agile practices even though they seem like the first things to go when you are in an emergency. Newcomers and experts alike will leave with a palpable, even visceral, connection to some frequent Agile concepts and an understanding of why all of the practices need to stay in place. An additional side benefit might even be for the attendees to begin to envision Agile applications outside of software development.

Learning Objectives:

1.  We will connect common Agile ideas by using the real-world experience of working through major flooding events in Houston in the past couple of years.

2. Attendees will leave the meeting with a vivid connection to and understanding of frequent Agile concepts.

3. Attendees will be able to envision applications of Agile outside of software development.
