Kenneth Smith
Academy Leadership

Ken Smith is a distinguished graduate from the United States Military Academy class of 1996, where he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He left the Army as a Major after 12 years as an Infantry officer, including two combat tours. Ken earned the Bronze Star Medal during his service in Iraq and is a Ranger School graduate. He holds a Master's Degree in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University.

Ken lives his passion transforming good managers into inspirational leaders. He merges theoretical knowledge with real-world experiences to deliver a unique leadership development experience. He is especially skilled at developing introverts and technical individuals after spending 9 years leading engineering teams in the oil and gas industry.

Academy Leadership, a Registered Education Provider for the Project Management Institute, is a veteran-owned leadership development team that works with the heads of organizations who experience frustration with aspects of their leadership team’s performance. This could be communication challenges, low motivation, or lack of accountability or difficulty resolving conflict. We develop leaders who deliver results.

Topic Description:

Too many project managers site “poor communication” as a challenge to effectively completing a project.  But Perhaps the project manager themselves are responsible for this breakdown.  Effective communication contains 5 essential elements.  The most overlooked is a feedback mechanism to make sure message sent equals message received.

After completing this session, you will:

  • Understand why feedback is the final communication connection
  • Understand both communications and performance feedback and how they differ
  • Learn key principles and tips for improving feedback communications
  • Understand why active listening and using brief-back techniques are essential to effective communications
  • Learn why effective Project Managers not only give consistent feedback but also, solicit feedback from their team

Dinner Meeting: How Highly Successful Project Managers Become Highly Successful
Jim Ratliff, SCPM

Jim had a distinguished career at NASA’s Johnson Space Center where he served as a Project Manager for some of NASA’s most complex projects including the redesign of the Space Shuttle cockpit, design of the Orion spacecraft cockpit and development of an experiment payload for a Mars mission.  He was appointed the NASA Agency Project Manager for development of Avionics and Software technologies needed to enable deep space human exploration.  In 2018, Jim was detailed to NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC to manage the work of advanced exploration technology Project Managers at 5 NASA Centers. He also served as the Associate Division Chief of the Avionics Systems Division at JSC where he had management responsibilities for 120 engineers that developed human-rated hardware for NASA’s spacecraft. He has received numerous awards from the Director of the Johnson Space Center, the NASA Administrator and the National Science Foundation for his Project Management and Leadership accomplishments.

Jim has a BSEE degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, Completed Executive Management Program training at Penn State University and has a Project Management Certification from Stanford University (SCPM)

Following his retirement from the Johnson Space Center earlier this year, Jim is now pursuing his passion to help others advance their project management and leadership skills.

Topic Description:

Organizations tend to rely on the same small group of Project Managers for their most important projects. Other PMs often struggle to understand what it takes to become part of that elite group assigned to the best projects. Having been selected as a Project Manager for key projects and been in a position to select Project Managers for key projects, Jim will share his thoughts on traits common to all highly successful Project Managers.  He will also discuss how you can learn and apply these traits quicker than you may think to jump-start your career.
