Letter from the President

Happy New Year to You!

Time flies! Seems like I was just watching Thanksgiving fireworks at Uptown Houston - now suddenly it’s 2017. Shortly the Super Bowl will take place here in Houston, then suddenly it’s spring and baseball returns.

We all laughed at our parents saying time flies by and now we see what they mean!

What do you have planned for 2017? Did you make a resolution or did you make a plan? Did you set a goal and place a deadline on your calendar?

Chances are if you don’t place it on your calendar it won’t happen. Before you know it 2017 will be over. Time flies…

I challenge you to make a plan. Write down your goal and break it into doable pieces and place it on your calendar. We are great at managing projects for our employers. Don’t forget to manage your most important project: yourself. Invest in yourself make a plan to: exercise, learn a new skill, spend time with your family, do what you love.

One of your 2017 goals should definitely be to build your professional skills. “Sharpen the saw” and invest time in refreshing your skill set or learning something new.

As you make your plan look to PMI Houston for opportunities to learn. On our calendar this year we have:

February 11th Keep Houston Agile 2017

We are partnering with Agile Leadership Network (ALN) Houston to host our first annual Keep Houston Agile Workshop.  Bringing together Agile leaders in this one-day event to share real world experiences and providing a networking forum for like-minded technical professionals. Space is limited, so register early.

June 5th – 6th The Power of you

First week in June every year our annual professional development conference for project management professionals returns.

We are excited about our keynote and workshop speakers selected just for you.

This year expect some changes. Based on your feedback we’re focusing more time to learn skills and reducing the conference to 2 days. Were back at NRG Center. Space is limited so watch for registration details and register early.

North Venue Celebrates a Year of Success

By Phil Robertson, North Venue Ambassador

The PMI Houston North Venue has undergone a number of changes throughout the past year. Our established esteemed Director has agreed on taking on a new position with PMI Houston as VP of Programs. Edwin Jabbour accepted the position of Director, North Venue and recruited Alexis King as Back Up Director and Phil Robertson and Anit Johnson as Ambassadors to assist in managing the monthly meetings. We are all available to welcome attendees and new PMI members at our venue.

Due to the presidential election this year that occurred on the same day as our Nov. meeting on the 8th, it was deemed to be of great importance to give up on the meeting for this month allowing all members time to complete their citizenship duties to vote.

On December 13, 2016 the North venue resumed its monthly meeting with our annual holiday season celebration dinner at Peli Peli in Vintage Park that was elegantly decorated for the festive season. It was well attended by 34 members, spouses, friends and colleagues enjoyed a delightful evening with a great dinner menu.

In lieu of the normal presentation program format, attendees were able to mix and mingle, network, enjoy the fabulous meal, win varied door prizes and collect Toys for Tots to be distributed to less fortunate children in the Houston area.

Special guest, PMI Houston Vice President of Membership, Angela Doray, represented the PMI board and welcomed guests, giving a brief summary of the PMI activities and accomplishments during the past year.   PMI North Venue Director, Edwin Jabbour served as host and master of ceremonies and kept the festivities lively and the door prize drawings in “full-swing”.

Attendees were served an outstanding meal of beef medallions, mixed grilled vegetables, potatoes and key lime pie.   Not only was the food outstanding, but several guests were fortunate to win Peli Peli gift cards donated for the door prize drawings, three Amazon fire tables among many PMI door prizes and memorabilia.  Peli Peli has earned a reputation of being one of the finest restaurants in the Houston area. We are very fortunate to have such a great venue location.

During the event an informal survey pertaining to the North venue meetings was taken in an effort to get attendees’ impressions of the regular meetings and to make them more appealing and productive.  Overall responses were very positive with regard to the venue, quality of speakers, presentation topics and format.   Several suggestions for improvement included allowing a specific time for exchange of information between job seekers and those with employment opportunities, email reminders to past attendees of upcoming venue meetings and topics and token giveaways as attendees arrive at the venue.

PMI-H North venue partnered with Peli Peli and established charity Toys for Tots to collect the numerous donated toys to help the less fortunate in the Houston area.

In summary, the venue had a great year, we attended some great speakers sharing their experiences & knowledge into the various PMI Talent Triangle, closing it with a very relaxing and enjoyable networking evening, preparing us all for a great year end festivities with our families & friends. We look forward to continue the great momentum into 2017 & always look forward to seeing among us as well as receive your input & feedback.

Peli Peli at Vintage Park is the site of our regular PMI Houston North meeting every 2nd Tuesday of each month.  Be sure to join us in 2017!

Project Management Toastmasters Clubs - Tips and Discussion

Quote:"Those who tell the stories rule the world” – Native American Proverb

10. Don’t apologize. If you make a mistake, there’s no need to say you’re sorry. Pick up where you left off and keep going.

If you want to communicate well, you must start well.  The opening of a speech must grab the listener's attention.

The opening should:

        Generate intellectual curiosity
Engender emotions and empathy          Produce a positive emotional

Remember the power of THREE, and your audience will remember your message.

Three powerful methods to opening a speech are:

  •         Begin with a question to engage the audience
  •         Open the speech boldly to capture the audience's attention
  •         Open the speech in an unusual manner

If you lose your audience in the opening, they are unlikely to discover your message along the way!
