    PMI North Meeting

Pre Meeting:  Feedback for Growth & Mastery
    Rashid N. Kapadia
    Eloquence Evangelist

Rashid N. Kapadia, PMP, is a speaker, project manager, engineer, consultant, and author of “Necessary Bridges: Public Speaking & Storytelling for Project Managers & Engineers”.

Born & raised in India, he started his career in the merchant navy, where over 17 years he progressed from marine engineering apprentice to chief engineer. Rashid moved to the US in 1995 pursuing a Master’s degree in Marine Management and other advanced marine commercial certification in Chartering and Agency.

In the US, over 14 years, he worked for 3 organizations providing leadership in commercial merchant shipping, chartering & operations, marine and offshore engineering and repair operations, project management, and business development. In 2014 he took a career sabbatical to write a book and polish his public speaking skills. In 2015, along with his wife Anahita, he co-founded Necessary Bridges, Inc.

He is an evangelist for “Public Speaking, & Storytelling” and for “Regular & Disciplined

Reading”. Rashid is a lifelong student and an avid reader—committed to reading 50 non-fiction books every year—and is constantly on the lookout for new knowledge that can be applied to uplift professions and solve problems.

    Topic Description:
    • Well-intentioned and skillfully delivered feedback is a fuel for growth.
    • Insightful and/or expert feedback is a building block of mastery.
    • Frequent and candid feedback is a formula for making feedback feel normal, and for creating a culture of continuous feedback.

In this presentation, three methods of feedback are discussed and demonstrated.

    Audience participation is required:

    1. Mild: Toastmasters Evaluation Model. For improvement
    2. Medium: Feedback for Purposeful/Deliberate Practice Model. Road to mastery.
    3. Hot: ARR (After Action Review) Model + case study from HBR (Harvard Business Review). Road to making feedback feel normal, and creating a culture of continuous feedback.

To validate the approach, short video clips—with leaders and experts evangelizing

    coaching—are included.

The audience will be invited to provide feedback:

    1. To the speaker—and offer suggestions for improvement.
    2. About how the audience is paying attention to the speaker—and offer suggestions for improvement.
    3. About the entire meeting—and offer suggestions for improvement.

Time permitting, short “discuss and debrief” sessions are included.
Time permitting, an unorthodox form of feedback—GTFT (Generous Tit-For-Tat)—for enhancing workplace collaboration and trust is included.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Frequency of feedback provided is more important than skill & eloquence of feedback provider.
    • Intention of feedback provider is more important than skill & eloquence of feedback provider.
    • Feedback that is sought is far more effective than feedback that is enforced.

    From this session participants will:

    1. Learn about, and discuss 3 different ways to provide—& receive—feedback.
    2. Practice giving feedback for improvement
    • to the speaker
    • to the audience
    • about the entire meeting.

    Topic Description:

In the good old days, new product development was so manageable with Scrum. We ambled along with 30-day sprints, a single product owner, a neat product backlog, and a collocated Scrum team. Today’s business environment is a tsunami of global hypercompetition. Companies enter and are forced off the S&P 500 every 15 years. The classic Innovators Dilemma has become more pressing.

Disruptive innovation requires us to gather and filter ideas, creatively experiment with them, sell them internally, and ultimately capture their economic value. In the 21st century, we need to surf business turbulence by creating innovative new products and services. Simultaneously, we need to operate existing products and services and trade out non-performing ones for sustained business value.

Learn the five essential steps to surf this “fuzzy front-end” of innovation, including innovation pipeline management, Agile budgeting and incremental funding, high-performance standing teams, product discovery and lean experimentation, and high-performance Agile engineering.
